Arizona asks the most of a chocolate parcel of any state we send to, and it rewards patience more than any other.

Summer is for the biscuit tin

From April to October, the only honest advice is to leave chocolate out of the box. Everything else is fair game.

Anzac biscuits are oats and golden syrup. Wine gums are firm and forgiving. A jar of New Zealand Marmite will not notice the weather at all. Add a couple of bags of crisps and you have a box the heat cannot spoil.

Winter is for chocolate

Once November comes round, Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tucson cool into the kind of weather chocolate likes. That is the time to send a Whittaker’s block, or three.

It is also the season many people spend in Arizona by choice. If you winter in the desert, the months you are there line up neatly with the months the chocolate aisle is safe to order from.

The clock that stays put

Most of Arizona never changes its clocks, which makes it unusual. In the American summer it shares a clock with California, and in the American winter it shares one with Colorado.

Against Auckland, that leaves a gap of 19 or 20 hours, and it only moves when New Zealand’s clocks do.

Chocolate and the weather

Chocolate from November to March. Biscuits, lollies and spreads the rest of the year.

Parcels travel unrefrigerated, and a doorstep in Phoenix or Tucson in summer will melt chocolate quickly. Melted chocolate is not refunded. The high country around Flagstaff is cooler, but for most addresses the rule is simple. Wait for the cool season.

What to send to Arizona

Picked for this trip, not a bestseller list. One line on each says why it earns its place in the box.

Oats and golden syrup, baked golden. Heat cannot do much to an Anzac biscuit.

New Zealand Marmite, which is not the British one. A sealed jar that laughs at July.

Firm and chewy, and far more forgiving of heat than chocolate.

Proper Crisps, cooked in Nelson, with rosemary and thyme.

Ordered most often to the United States

Built from real orders sent anywhere in the United States, refreshed daily. No names, no numbers, just what leaves Auckland for the United States most often.

One rate covers the first 2 kg

Your DHL Express rate follows the weight of the box, not where in the United States it is going. A half full box costs the same to send as a full one, so the trick is filling it well. Above 2 kg a step rate applies per 0.5 kg, and the exact figure shows at checkout once you enter your address.

Import charges are set by the United States, not by us

They are the same everywhere in the United States, and they do not change because your address is in Arizona. We never add them to your price and we do not try to predict them. The only reliable source is U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Is it safe to send chocolate to Arizona in summer +

No. Parcels travel unrefrigerated, and Arizona summer heat will soften or melt chocolate before it reaches you. Melted chocolate is not refunded. Between April and October, order biscuits, lollies, crisps and spreads, and come back for chocolate in November.

Is New Zealand Marmite the same as British Marmite +

No. They share a name and a colour and not much else. New Zealand Marmite is made by Sanitarium to its own recipe, and New Zealanders abroad tend to be loyal to theirs. If you grew up on it, the British jar is not a substitute.

How far behind Auckland is Arizona +

Nineteen hours during the New Zealand winter and twenty during the New Zealand summer. Because most of Arizona does not change its clocks, the gap only moves when New Zealand's does. The Navajo Nation does observe daylight saving, so its gap follows the rest of the Mountain time zone.
