Chicago built a large part of America’s candy industry. It is a good city to hand a bag of New Zealand lollies to, because it knows what it is tasting.

A different tradition

New Zealand lollies are built on different flavours. Pineapple is a favourite. Feijoa, a fruit most Americans have never tasted, has its own sour lolly. Hokey pokey, the honeycomb toffee, goes into almost everything.

The one to start with is Pineapple Lumps: a chewy pineapple centre in a thin chocolate coat, and nothing like anything on a Chicago shelf. After that, the lolly aisle is the place to explore.

The chocolate fish

Every New Zealander knows the phrase “you deserve a chocolate fish”. It is the sort of thing a teacher says to a child who has done well, and the reward is literal: a marshmallow fish in chocolate. Sending one is a very New Zealand way of saying well done.

When to order

Illinois gives chocolate a long season. From October to May, send Whittaker’s blocks freely. In the humid weeks of summer, switch to lollies and biscuits, which do not mind the weather.

Chocolate and the weather

Blocks once the lake turns cold. Lollies through the humid weeks.

Parcels travel unrefrigerated. Chicago's July humidity is hard on chocolate left outside, so June to September suits lollies, biscuits and crisps. From October, chocolate is back on the list.

What to send to Illinois

Picked for this trip, not a bestseller list. One line on each says why it earns its place in the box.

Chewy pineapple centres in chocolate. There is nothing like them in an American candy aisle.

A chocolate fish, the treat New Zealand hands out as a reward. Strawberry marshmallow inside.

Crocodiles from Mayceys, a New Zealand lolly maker. Chewy, not chocolate, so fine in any season.

Raisins and almonds in milk chocolate. An October to May order in Illinois.

Ordered most often to the United States

Built from real orders sent anywhere in the United States, refreshed daily. No names, no numbers, just what leaves Auckland for the United States most often.

One rate covers the first 2 kg

Your DHL Express rate follows the weight of the box, not where in the United States it is going. A half full box costs the same to send as a full one, so the trick is filling it well. Above 2 kg a step rate applies per 0.5 kg, and the exact figure shows at checkout once you enter your address.

Import charges are set by the United States, not by us

They are the same everywhere in the United States, and they do not change because your address is in Illinois. We never add them to your price and we do not try to predict them. The only reliable source is U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

How are New Zealand lollies different from American candy +

The flavours are different more than the formats. Pineapple, feijoa and hokey pokey do a lot of work in New Zealand, and some favourites, like Pineapple Lumps, have no American equivalent at all. The word is different too. In New Zealand, candy is lollies.

What does "chocolate fish" mean +

In New Zealand it is both a treat and a phrase. A chocolate fish is pink or white marshmallow in a fish shape, coated in chocolate, and "you deserve a chocolate fish" is what you say to someone who has done well.
