Two quite different people end up on this page.

The first is a New Zealander living in the States who knows exactly what they want and just needs it to arrive. The second is an American who went to New Zealand, ate something there, and has been trying to find it ever since.

Both are welcome. The second one needs a translation first.

A short glossary before you shop

New Zealand does not use American words for any of this, and the aisles here are labelled the New Zealand way.

  • Lollies are candy. Chewy, hard, sour, the whole lot.
  • Biscuits are cookies. A biscuit in New Zealand is never a savoury scone.
  • Chippies are chips, and chips are fries.
  • Hokey pokey is honeycomb toffee, closest to what is sold as sponge candy.
  • A slab is a chunky bar, as in the Peanut Slab.
  • Fizzy is soda.

Why the chocolate tastes different

The comparison people reach for is sweetness. New Zealand milk chocolate is built around a creamier, less sugary profile than most of what sits on an American shelf, and the difference is obvious in a plain block before it is obvious in a flavoured one.

So start plain. A Creamy Milk block tells you whether the rest of the shelf is for you, and it costs less to find out than a mixed box does.

If you have been to New Zealand

The things people come home talking about are usually Pineapple Lumps, a Whittaker’s block, hokey pokey in some form, and whatever biscuit they were handed with a cup of tea. All four are in the Kiwi Classics aisle, which exists for exactly this reason.

Chocolate and the weather

Pick the month before you pick the chocolate.

A July delivery to Phoenix and a January delivery to Seattle are different propositions, and parcels travel unrefrigerated either way. Biscuits, hard lollies and spreads are safe all year. Save the chocolate blocks for the cooler half of the calendar.

What to send to the United States

Picked for this trip, not a bestseller list. One line on each says why it earns its place in the box.

The block to start with. Thicker and less sweet than most American milk chocolate.

The most New Zealand thing in the shop, and the one to try first.

Hokey pokey is the honeycomb toffee Americans mostly meet as sponge candy.

A biscuit, which in New Zealand means a cookie. Travels well.

Ordered most often to the United States

Built from real orders sent to the United States, refreshed daily. No names, no numbers, just what leaves Auckland for here most often.

One rate covers the first 2 kg

Your DHL Express rate to the United States follows the weight of the box. A half full box costs the same to send as a full one, so the trick is filling it well. Above 2 kg a step rate applies per 0.5 kg, and the exact figure shows at checkout once you enter your address.

Closer to home

Some parts of the United States need different advice to the rest of it.

Start here

Import charges are set by the United States, not by us

We never add them to your price, and we do not try to predict them. The rules change without notice, so the only reliable source is U.S. Customs and Border Protection. If anything is owed, DHL Express contacts you before delivery.

Shipping to the United States

How long does delivery to the USA take

Typically 3 to 5 business days with DHL Express once your order leaves Auckland, with dispatch inside 1 to 2 business days of payment. These are carrier estimates rather than guarantees, and customs processing can add a day or two.

What currency are prices shown in

US dollars. USD is the base currency of the store, so American orders see prices in USD throughout and are charged in USD at checkout.

Will the chocolate melt on the way

It depends on the month and where you are. Parcels travel unrefrigerated and we cannot control temperatures after dispatch, so chocolate sent into a hot summer may arrive soft or melted, and melted chocolate is not refunded. Biscuits, hard lollies and spreads travel well in any season.

Is New Zealand chocolate different from American chocolate

Most people notice it immediately. New Zealand blocks are built around a creamier milk chocolate and tend to read as less sweet than the American bars they are compared with. The best way to judge it is a plain milk block first, before the flavoured ones.
