Oregon has its own berry, and New Zealand has one too. They are closer relatives than most people on either side realise.

The marionberry is Oregon’s. The boysenberry is, in practice, New Zealand’s: the country grows more of them than anywhere else, most of them around Nelson. Boysenberry is the flavour of summer jam and ice cream there, the way marionberry pie is here.

Where to find it

The simplest way in is a jar of boysenberry jam. It travels in any weather and is heavy enough to anchor a box.

For something sweeter, the Queen Anne boysenberry bar sets boysenberry jelly and marshmallow under dark chocolate. That one is a cool weather order east of the mountains.

Two sides of the Cascades

The mountains decide what to order. Portland, Salem, Eugene and the coast sit in mild, damp air that chocolate tolerates for most of the year.

Cross the range, or head south to the Rogue Valley, and summer is a different season. Hot afternoons and sunny porches soften chocolate fast. From June to September in those places, fill the box with biscuits, lollies and spreads instead.

Sea foam, by another name

In the Pacific Northwest, honeycomb toffee often goes by sea foam. New Zealand calls it hokey pokey, and puts it into ice cream, biscuits and chocolate. The Whittaker’s Hokey Pokey block is the one to start with.

For New Zealanders living here, there is a small piece of home in Portland too: New Zealand keeps an honorary consul in the city.

Chocolate and the weather

Chocolate most of the year in the west. Wait for autumn in the south and east.

Parcels travel unrefrigerated. For a Portland or coastal address, a summer order of chocolate usually arrives in good shape. For Medford, Bend or anywhere east of the Cascades, send biscuits, lollies and jam between June and September, and save the blocks for the cooler months.

What to send to Oregon

Picked for this trip, not a bestseller list. One line on each says why it earns its place in the box.

New Zealand boysenberry jam. The marionberry's cousin, on toast.

Boysenberry jelly and vanilla marshmallow under dark chocolate. A west of the Cascades order in summer.

Hokey pokey is the honeycomb toffee the Pacific Northwest often calls sea foam.

A plain coconut biscuit with nothing in it to melt, so it goes anywhere in the state in any month.

Ordered most often to the United States

Built from real orders sent anywhere in the United States, refreshed daily. No names, no numbers, just what leaves Auckland for the United States most often.

One rate covers the first 2 kg

Your DHL Express rate follows the weight of the box, not where in the United States it is going. A half full box costs the same to send as a full one, so the trick is filling it well. Above 2 kg a step rate applies per 0.5 kg, and the exact figure shows at checkout once you enter your address.

Import charges are set by the United States, not by us

They are the same everywhere in the United States, and they do not change because your address is in Oregon. We never add them to your price and we do not try to predict them. The only reliable source is U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

What is the difference between a boysenberry and a marionberry +

Both are bramble berries from the blackberry family, bred by crossing earlier varieties. The boysenberry is large, dark and juicy, with a winey, slightly tart flavour. New Zealand grows more of them than anywhere else, which is why boysenberry turns up in jams, ice cream and chocolate there.

Is hokey pokey the same as sea foam +

It is the same as the honeycomb kind of sea foam. Both are honeycomb toffee, made by adding baking soda to hot sugar syrup so it sets full of bubbles. New Zealand eats it in chunks, in ice cream and set into chocolate, and calls all of it hokey pokey.

Can I send chocolate to Bend or Medford in summer +

We would not recommend it. Parcels travel unrefrigerated, and summer heat in southern and central Oregon can soften a block before it reaches you. Melted chocolate is not refunded. Biscuits, hard lollies and jam are the safer summer order there.
