Washington State is two places as far as chocolate is concerned, and one of them is among the easiest destinations we send to.

Puget Sound

Seattle, Bellevue, Tacoma and the rest of the Sound sit in mild marine air. A Whittaker’s block sent there in July usually arrives the way it left, which is not something we can say about most American cities.

That makes the western side of the state a good place to try the flavours New Zealand is proudest of. The Berry Forest block is a good place to start, and the hokey pokey range is the one to explore next.

East of the Cascades

Cross the mountains and summer is a different season. Spokane, Yakima and the Tri-Cities get hot, dry afternoons, and a sunny step softens chocolate quickly. From June to September, send crisps, biscuits and lollies there, and switch to chocolate in October.

Sea foam and hokey pokey

If you know sea foam candy, you already know hokey pokey. In New Zealand it is a flavour as much as a sweet, and it turns up in ice cream, biscuits and chocolate blocks.

Chocolate and the weather

West of the Cascades, chocolate most of the year. East of them, wait for autumn.

Parcels travel unrefrigerated. Around Puget Sound, even a July delivery usually arrives in good shape. In Spokane, Yakima and the rest of the east, send biscuits, lollies and crisps from June to September, and save the chocolate for the cooler months.

What to send to Washington

Picked for this trip, not a bestseller list. One line on each says why it earns its place in the box.

Plain hokey pokey, no chocolate. If you grew up on sea foam, this is the taste test.

Berries in creamy milk chocolate. A good match for a Puget Sound summer.

Thick cut and simply salted. A safe summer order east of the mountains.

Spearmint jelly lollies from Mayceys. Chewy, not chocolate, so they go anywhere in the state.

Ordered most often to the United States

Built from real orders sent anywhere in the United States, refreshed daily. No names, no numbers, just what leaves Auckland for the United States most often.

One rate covers the first 2 kg

Your DHL Express rate follows the weight of the box, not where in the United States it is going. A half full box costs the same to send as a full one, so the trick is filling it well. Above 2 kg a step rate applies per 0.5 kg, and the exact figure shows at checkout once you enter your address.

Import charges are set by the United States, not by us

They are the same everywhere in the United States, and they do not change because your address is in Washington. We never add them to your price and we do not try to predict them. The only reliable source is U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Is hokey pokey the same as sea foam candy +

It is the same as the honeycomb kind. Both are made by stirring baking soda into hot sugar syrup so it sets full of bubbles. In New Zealand, hokey pokey is also the name of an ice cream flavour, vanilla with little chunks of the toffee through it.

Can I send chocolate to Seattle in summer +

Usually, yes. Puget Sound summers are mild, and a chocolate parcel collected promptly tends to arrive in good shape. Parcels travel unrefrigerated, so a rare heatwave is the exception worth watching for.

Is there a New Zealand consul in Washington State +

Yes. New Zealand keeps an honorary consul in Seattle. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade lists the current contact on its page for the embassy in Washington, DC.
