Colorado is the only state where a customer has good reason to worry that something has gone wrong with their crisps. Nothing has.

The puffed up bag

Every bag of crisps we send is sealed at sea level in Auckland. Denver is a mile up, and the mountain towns are higher still. The air inside the bag is at Auckland pressure, the air outside is thinner, and the bag swells to make up the difference.

It looks alarming and it is harmless. The same thing happens to a bag of chips bought in a Denver supermarket on its way up from the factory. A bag of Bluebird salt and vinegar tastes exactly as it should.

A kinder climate for chocolate

Colorado’s dry air helps. Chocolate suffers most in heat combined with humidity, and Colorado usually has only one of the two.

On the Front Range, from Boulder down to Colorado Springs, summer afternoons still get hot. Send crisps, lollies and biscuits from June to August, and the chocolate from September.

In the mountain towns the season is longer. A Whittaker’s block sent to Aspen or Breckenridge in July has a far better chance than one sent to the valley.

Chocolate and the weather

Chocolate from September to May on the Front Range, longer in the mountains.

Parcels travel unrefrigerated. A July afternoon in Denver or Colorado Springs can soften a block on a sunny step, so summer suits crisps, biscuits and lollies there. Higher towns like Aspen, Vail and Breckenridge stay cool enough that chocolate is a reasonable order for most of the year.

What to send to Colorado

Picked for this trip, not a bestseller list. One line on each says why it earns its place in the box.

The bag that will arrive looking inflated. The crisps inside are fine.

Dark chocolate and whole almonds. A mountain town order in any season.

A lolly scramble is a New Zealand party tradition. Throw these and watch the kids run.

Honeycomb toffee in milk chocolate, for the cooler months on the Front Range.

Ordered most often to the United States

Built from real orders sent anywhere in the United States, refreshed daily. No names, no numbers, just what leaves Auckland for the United States most often.

One rate covers the first 2 kg

Your DHL Express rate follows the weight of the box, not where in the United States it is going. A half full box costs the same to send as a full one, so the trick is filling it well. Above 2 kg a step rate applies per 0.5 kg, and the exact figure shows at checkout once you enter your address.

Import charges are set by the United States, not by us

They are the same everywhere in the United States, and they do not change because your address is in Colorado. We never add them to your price and we do not try to predict them. The only reliable source is U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Why did my bag of crisps arrive puffed up +

Because of the altitude. The bag was sealed at sea level in Auckland, and at a mile high the air outside it is thinner, so the air inside pushes the bag outwards. The crisps are unaffected. Open it slowly and it will sigh back to normal.

Can I send chocolate to Colorado in summer +

To the mountain towns, often yes. To Denver and the rest of the Front Range, we would wait. Parcels travel unrefrigerated, and a hot afternoon on a doorstep can soften a block. Melted chocolate is not refunded.

Is there a New Zealand consul in Colorado +

Yes. New Zealand keeps an honorary consul in Denver. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade lists the current contact on its page for the embassy in Washington, which handles passports and most formal consular work.

What is a lolly scramble +

A New Zealand party tradition. Someone throws a handful of wrapped lollies into the air and the children scramble to collect as many as they can. It is still a fixture at school fairs and birthday parties there.
