L&P, the New Zealand Vernors
L&P is a lemon soft drink named after Paeroa, a small town in the Waikato. It is sweet, lightly fizzy and hard to describe to anyone who did not grow up with it, which is probably how Detroit feels about Vernors.
L&P is heavy for its size, so it works best as the anchor of a box, with lighter things around it. Order it in spring, summer or autumn. A Michigan January can freeze a drink on the porch.
A long season for chocolate
The cold that is hard on bottles is good for chocolate. From October to May, a Whittaker’s block is a safe order anywhere from Detroit to the Upper Peninsula. The banana caramel block is one of the more unusual flavours New Zealand makes, and it is worth a try.
