Alaska is the one state where the usual chocolate warning points the wrong way.
In Texas or Florida the question is whether a block will survive the summer. In Anchorage the summer is the easy part. A Whittaker’s block in July is about as safe a parcel as we send anywhere in the country.
Plan around the winter
The cold creates its own small problems, and both are easy to avoid.
The first is drinks. A can of L&P left on a frozen porch can split before anyone finds it. Order fizzy in the warmer months, or when someone will be home to bring the parcel inside.
The second is bloom. Chocolate that comes in from the cold and meets a warm room can gather moisture and turn pale on the surface. It tastes the same. Leave it in the wrapper for an hour or two and it keeps its shine.
No Alaska surcharge
If you are used to seeing “contiguous US only” at a checkout, this is not that. The whole country is one zone for us, and the rate follows the weight of the box rather than the distance. One rate covers the first 2 kg, so the way to get value from a parcel to Alaska is the same as anywhere else: fill it.
A good way to fill it is to mix the heavy with the light. A block or two of chocolate, a bag of Pineapple Lumps and a packet of Gingernuts sit comfortably under the line.
Where to start
If you already know what you miss, the Kiwi Classics aisle is the short list. If you are new to New Zealand food, start with the chocolate. Nowhere else in the country is it this easy to send.
Chocolate and the weather
Order chocolate in any month. Hold the fizzy until spring.
Parcels travel unrefrigerated, and an Alaskan summer rarely gets warm enough to soften a block. Winter is the season to think about. Leave cans and bottles for the warmer months, and let chocolate reach room temperature in its wrapper before you open it.

What to send to Alaska
Picked for this trip, not a bestseller list. One line on each says why it earns its place in the box.
Safe to order in July here, which is not true in most of the country.
A chocolate topped biscuit that Florida should only order in January. Alaska can have it all year.
Whittaker's 72 per cent dark. Dark chocolate keeps well in a cool pantry.
New Zealand's hot drink. A powder, so the cold cannot touch it.
Ordered most often to the United States
Built from real orders sent anywhere in the United States, refreshed daily. No names, no numbers, just what leaves Auckland for the United States most often.
One rate covers the first 2 kg
Your DHL Express rate follows the weight of the box, not where in the United States it is going. A half full box costs the same to send as a full one, so the trick is filling it well. Above 2 kg a step rate applies per 0.5 kg, and the exact figure shows at checkout once you enter your address.
Import charges are set by the United States, not by us
They are the same everywhere in the United States, and they do not change because your address is in Alaska. We never add them to your price and we do not try to predict them. The only reliable source is U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Shipping to Alaska
Straight answers for Alaska addresses.
Do you charge extra to ship to Alaska +
No. The United States is a single shipping zone, so an Alaskan address pays the same as any other American address. One rate covers the first 2 kg, then a step rate applies per half kilogram above that. The exact figure shows at checkout once you enter your address.
What happens if the chocolate freezes +
It is still fine to eat. Freezing does not spoil chocolate, but carrying a frozen block into a warm kitchen can leave a pale, dusty film on the surface. That film is called bloom, and it forms when moisture settles on cold chocolate. Leave the block sealed in its wrapper until it reaches room temperature and it will look the way it should.
Can I order drinks in winter +
You can, but it is a gamble if the parcel will sit outside. Cans and bottles can freeze and split on a porch in the coldest months. If someone will be home to bring the box straight in, the risk is small.
