Rhode Island is small enough to cross in about an hour, and two of the things it is proudest of have a New Zealand match.

Coffee, sweetened

Rhode Island sweetens its milk with coffee syrup and made the result its state drink. New Zealand does not have coffee milk, but it has the next best thing on our shelves: a Whittaker’s block made with Wellington coffee.

Pair it with a packet of malt biscuits, which is what a New Zealand kitchen puts next to a cup of coffee.

A sailing town with an Auckland connection

Newport was the home of the America’s Cup for more than half a century. The Cup is now held by Team New Zealand, and Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour grew up around the racing.

So a Newport sailor who has been to Auckland has probably eaten on that waterfront. If there was a bag of Pineapple Lumps on the boat, that is the taste to send for.

When to order

Rhode Island’s ocean air keeps the chocolate season long. The warm weeks of July and August are the exception, and those are the months to send biscuits and lollies instead.

Chocolate and the weather

Ocean air gives Rhode Island a long chocolate season.

Parcels travel unrefrigerated. July and August bring the only real risk, a run of warm, sticky days, so those are the months for biscuits and lollies. From September through June, chocolate is a comfortable order.

What to send to Rhode Island

Picked for this trip, not a bestseller list. One line on each says why it earns its place in the box.

Whittaker's chocolate made with coffee roasted in Wellington. The obvious one for a coffee milk state.

Caramel brittle and sea salt from Marlborough, at the top of the South Island. For the Ocean State.

The plain biscuit New Zealand dunks. Built for a cup of coffee.

Chewy, milky and very New Zealand. The lolly aisle's version of a glass of milk.

Ordered most often to the United States

Built from real orders sent anywhere in the United States, refreshed daily. No names, no numbers, just what leaves Auckland for the United States most often.

One rate covers the first 2 kg

Your DHL Express rate follows the weight of the box, not where in the United States it is going. A half full box costs the same to send as a full one, so the trick is filling it well. Above 2 kg a step rate applies per 0.5 kg, and the exact figure shows at checkout once you enter your address.

Import charges are set by the United States, not by us

They are the same everywhere in the United States, and they do not change because your address is in Rhode Island. We never add them to your price and we do not try to predict them. The only reliable source is U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Is there anything like coffee milk in New Zealand +

Not as a drink. New Zealand's coffee culture is built on espresso, and sweet coffee flavours mostly turn up in chocolate and baking instead. The Whittaker's coffee block is the closest match on our shelves.

When should I avoid ordering chocolate to Rhode Island +

In the warmest weeks of summer, usually July and August. Parcels travel unrefrigerated, and a humid day on a porch can soften a block. Melted chocolate is not refunded, so those months are better for biscuits and lollies.
