Vermont already understands something most of the country has to be taught: a sweet thing can taste of the place it comes from.

Maple is that for Vermont. For New Zealand it is mānuka, a native shrub whose honey is darker and sharper than anything else in the jar aisle. The easiest way to try it is not a jar at all. It is a Whittaker’s block that pairs it with pear.

The other syrup

If maple is the syrup on a Vermont table, golden syrup is the one in a New Zealand kitchen. It is what makes an Anzac biscuit chewy, and traditional hokey pokey is little more than golden syrup, sugar and baking soda.

A tin of Chelsea golden syrup is heavy, so pair it with lighter things to make the most of the box. One rate covers the first 2 kg, and a tin, a block and a packet of biscuits sit comfortably under it.

When to order

Vermont is one of the easier states to send chocolate to. Autumn, winter and spring all work, and summer is short.

Winter brings a different job. Chocolate does not mind the cold, but a can of L&P on a frozen step might. Leave the fizzy for spring, or order it when someone is home to take the parcel in.

Where to start

The Kiwi Classics aisle holds the things New Zealanders abroad ask for by name. The chocolate aisle is where most first orders begin, and in Vermont it is open for most of the year.

Chocolate and the weather

Chocolate from September to June. Drinks outside midwinter.

Parcels travel unrefrigerated. A Vermont July can still be warm enough to soften a block on a sunny porch, so the short summer is the one stretch to think about. The rest of the year, the bigger risk is cold, which is kinder to chocolate than to a can of fizzy.

What to send to Vermont

Picked for this trip, not a bestseller list. One line on each says why it earns its place in the box.

Mānuka honey and Nelson pear in a Whittaker's block. The closest thing we sell to a sugarhouse.

The syrup New Zealand bakes with. It goes into Anzac biscuits and hokey pokey, and over pancakes.

Crunchy honeycomb toffee through milk chocolate. Vermont weather suits it.

Caramel and chocolate on a biscuit. A cool climate order, and Vermont has one.

Ordered most often to the United States

Built from real orders sent anywhere in the United States, refreshed daily. No names, no numbers, just what leaves Auckland for the United States most often.

One rate covers the first 2 kg

Your DHL Express rate follows the weight of the box, not where in the United States it is going. A half full box costs the same to send as a full one, so the trick is filling it well. Above 2 kg a step rate applies per 0.5 kg, and the exact figure shows at checkout once you enter your address.

Import charges are set by the United States, not by us

They are the same everywhere in the United States, and they do not change because your address is in Vermont. We never add them to your price and we do not try to predict them. The only reliable source is U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

What is mānuka honey +

Honey made by bees feeding on the flowers of mānuka, a shrub native to New Zealand. It is darker and stronger than most table honey, with an earthy, slightly bitter edge. In the Whittaker's block it is paired with pear, which softens it.

Is Vermont too cold for a parcel to sit outside +

For chocolate and biscuits, no. Cold does not hurt them. Cans and bottles are different, because they can freeze and split. If you order drinks between late autumn and early spring, plan for someone to bring the box inside.

What is golden syrup +

A thick, amber cane sugar syrup, milder than molasses and more buttery than corn syrup. It is the backbone of New Zealand baking. Anzac biscuits and hokey pokey both depend on it.
